Angel Luis Tossas, 64 years young, fell asleep in death due to complications with COVID-19, on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Angel was the 6th child born to Jorge & Antonia Tossas in Bronx, New York on April 25, 1957. He made his grand entrance into the world weighing in at 11 lbs. He was known to family and friends as “CHOP.” This was because his Tia Mariana started calling him Chapiro (after her Jewish boss, Shapiro which she pronounced with a Spanish accent). Eventually, it was cut down to CHOP - a nickname that stuck with him for the rest of his life! Today, if you go to Manhattanville Projects, you will find someone who either remembers or knew CHOP.
He married his childhood sweetheart and # 1 Handball Fan, Lourdes Ramos in 1974. Wherever he played, there she was cheering her man – Chop and Pokey. They were blessed to start a family in 1986. That is when he became DAD with the birth of their daughter, Angel Leilani Tossas. This little girl changed his life, becoming the proverbial Daddy’s Girl. They worked side by side until the day he passed. Five years later in 1991, another blessing - Gabriel Anthony Tossas came into the world. What pride and joy Chop felt as he now had a boy to go with his girl. Chop worked tirelessly to provide for his family, and they will always be proud of him for the example he
showed.
“Grandpa or Papa,” the roles he enjoyed most in life - were titles he earned in 2013 when Karizma Joi (Chipmunk) was born. Then in 2018, Kiana Chanel (Billygoat) came on the scene. Just when we thought we had the house to ourselves, the grandkids filled our home and lives with loads of laughter and love along with the endless number of toys.
Being one of the big families in the Manhattanville Projects, Chop and his siblings were known for playing sports in the neighborhood: basketball in the health station, football and baseball in
the ball field, and handball on the courts @ 126th Street. It’s no surprise they loved sports because their Dad had also excelled in baseball during his younger days.
Whatever sport Chop played, he was a BEAST. Everybody knew that about him, so they wanted him on their team. He played at Randall’s Island with a couple of teams: Hijos Del Caribe and
Santurce, winning championships and even competing in Puerto Rico. Chop’s contributions to those wins did not go unnoticed. He gained lots of fans who cheered him on as he was a menacing Center Fielder and a Power Hitter. He also played in Central Park on the Café Central and Abe’s teams. More championships and memories were created.
Chop continued being involved in baseball throughout his life. He umpired for a time and eventually formed his own Co-ed Softball League, City Stars. For more than 20 years, he was the
Commissioner of City Stars – consisting of teams from Corporate America and The Arts.
If you knew Chop, you either experienced his humor, acts of kindness, generosity, love of food or just his plain old love of people. Chop is that someone you will not forget!
“LATER.”
