Wilfredo Ortega, aka Freddy, aka Felo, will be remembered for his love of family and being a generous friend long after his passing.
Freddy was born to Jorge Ortega and Lucilla Calíz. It was in the streets of NYC where he befriended all regardless of race and color and where the love of baseball took hold. He was part of numerous baseball leagues and was known as one of the best pitchers around. Not only have the Mets been his favorite team right from the start in 1962 but his kids and grandkids will root for no other. “Let’s Go Mets”
Though he faced many trials and tribulations, Freddy did not let those experiences define him. He pushed through and became a better person, helping himself and others, as with his work at the pantry. He was a beautiful example of life’s possibilities.
Kids always brought the biggest smile to his face and they will surely miss him. He is survived by his wife, Miguelina (“Mooky”), his children and stepchildren, grandkids and siblings.
With love, his baby sister Lucy reminds us that he is gone but not forgotten.
To his wife, Freddy will always be the best man God put in her life and will be ever present as long as she breathes.
His children know that one of the things he most loved in life was spending time with his family. He was there whenever they needed him and will always remember that he loved them.
