Sheldon Sweeper

Sheldon Sweeper, 62, of Manhattan, NY passed away on Friday, July 1, 2022. He was the beloved son of Nellie Sweeper and Jessie Brooks and one of 16 siblings. He was born on January 18, 1960 in Harlem. It is where his love for music, and particularly jazz, first began. He was a beloved brother, a caring father, and a loving grandfather. 

He was the type of person who could show empathy to a stranger as if they were family. Sheldon went by the nickname “Shorty Meals” with family and friends for his love of a good home cooked meal. He worked as a doorman for 15 years and later went to school for Culinary Arts and graduated. It was through his Uncle Leroy that he gained his love of music. He would always show others the emotion that lived in it. There are so many times where he would be showing his kids, nephews and nieces the good that comes within just playing an instrument or just singing a song that connects with you. He truly enjoyed listening to songs by Miles Davis and Eddie Jefferson like “There I Go, There I Go Again”. The Blues was always his favorite type to play. Throughout his life, he played thousands of songs, in countless concerts, making friends all along the way. We will always loved Sheldon and will miss him until we see him again.

Sheldon leaves to cherish his memory, his siblings, Jeanette Sweeper, Olivia Sweeper, Denise Sweeper, Karla Sweeper, Bruce Sweeper, Michael Sweeper, Darryl Sweeper, Mark Sweeper, Terrence Sweeper, his 2 children, Christian and Lauren Sweeper, grandson, Xavier Sweeper, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, great grand-nieces and great grand-nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. 

Sheldon is predeceased by 5 brothers, 1 sister, and adopted parents: Johnny Sweeper, Maurice Sweeper, Thomas Sweeper, Lawrence Sweeper, William Sweeper, Dorine Sweeper, Lois and Harold Basden.

Rest now, Sheldon. You’ve had a long journey and touched so many lives.
